Innocent Bystander In the novel ââ¬Å"The Tortilla Curtainâ⬠, by T. C Boyle, it tells a story about two completely different families; one family who is quite wealthy and the other who had illegally crossed the border and is barely making ends meet. In the story, a young lady by the name of America is taken to California by her husband, only to be victimized. We will write a custom essay sample on Innocent Bystander or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although she may not be the only victim in the book, she has been through a great ordeal of pain and suffering. America is a victim of immigration, racism, the American dream, and bad luck. America has left Mexico, with her husband Candido, to start a better life for not only themselves, but there unborn child as well. Immigration and racism has been a big issue for them throughout the story, even more so with America. Within the first few days upon arrival they both find themselves cornered by a couple of boys. These boys find whatever belongings both America and Candido had and when they realize there is a female present they say ââ¬Å"fucking beaners, rip it up, man. Destroy itâ⬠(Boyle 62). Migrating to California illegally was difficult because in a situation like this, there could have been nothing done to stop them. All America wanted was to find work to help support her family. The struggle bore on from ââ¬Å"dawn till noon and she didnââ¬â¢t get workâ⬠(Boyle 57). America has risked it all mad no matter how hard she tries she cannot seem to find work. America had left everything behind in search of this American dream she had played over and over in her head. She had been told, by her husband Candido, she was going to live a wonderful life and he had promised her nothing but the best. America didnââ¬â¢t need the finer things in life, all she desired was ââ¬Å"a house, a yard, maybe a TV and a car tooâ⬠(Boyle 29). She didnââ¬â¢t need too much to satisfy her, but being that America and Candido started from the bottom, it was more than what he had to offer. As they walk further into the land which they call their home America canââ¬â¢t help but gaze ââ¬Å"out on the grounded constellation on the valley floor, grid upon grid of lights and every one house, an apartmentâ⬠¦ everyone the promise if a life that would never again be this hardâ⬠(Boyle 206). America is again dreaming about the life she hopes to live in California and can only hope for the best outcome unto which she plans to bring a baby into place she knows so little about. She hopes that this is the America had gone through so much from the beginning of the novel. Candido had ââ¬Å"taken America from her father so they could have a better lifeâ⬠¦ -and now he couldnââ¬â¢t out food in her mouthâ⬠(Boyle 26). She had left the family she had ever known to risk it all to start a new life, and only to go day by day wondering how long she will have to go until her next meal. She had been victimized of racism and immigration from the first few days upon arrival and then she had to suffer statvation? It came down to where America told Candido she could not live like that. America had finally found a job, working for Jose Navidad, cleaning statues that he had imported. Just when things were starting to turn around, she is violated and raped by the man who had hired her. She tries to put the past behind her and think positive for her unborn child. After the baby is born America realizes she must have caught something from being raped because her baby cannot see. Candido was left with a ââ¬Å"violated wife and a blind babyâ⬠(Boyle 353), and at the end Americas first born child is taken away by the current of the water. From the beginning things are not looking too good for America. She had been hurt emotionally and physically with hardly any sign of their life getting better. She had given in to so many promises, none of which were ever kept. The impact that immigration, racism, the American dream, and back luck, had left America with nothing. She was just an innocent bystander trying to better her life. How to cite Innocent Bystander, Papers
Bishops The Fish Poetry Response Essay Example For Students
Bishops The Fish Poetry Response Essay In the poem The Fish, Elizabeth Bishop uses a fish as a symbol to express the theme of life and experience. The poem by itself has little structure to it. There are no apparent rhyme schemes, nor any clear meters. However, Bishop uses very powerful diction and ideas in the poem, forcing the reader to think and relate it to a greater aspect of his/her own life. The persona has a very mature and serious tone, and some gloomy element to his/her mood. The poem uses a significant amount of imagery. Descriptions like brown skin hung in strips and fresh and crisp with blood are common throughout the poem. The reader can almost see the fish on the boat, waiting for its life to end. Bishop also uses a plethora of colors in the poem. Colors include: brown skin, green weed, dramatic reds and blacks, yellowed, green line, and it also contains the combination of all the colors in the spectrum as rainbow, rainbow, rainbow! was repeated in the poem. The Colors are there to enhance the imagery and also work archetypically to express the mood of the poem. When the persona states that the oil had spread a rainbow, it should indicate that tears has formed in her eyes, splitting the light into its spectrum, as she also mentions sun-cracked thwarts. At the end where everything was rainbow, tears had flooded her eyes, blurring every sight and showing only splashes of colors all around. At the beginning of the poem, the persona notes that the fish did not fight at all. She describes the fish as battered, homely, but yet venerable. Later she discovers that the fish has fought many battles, and the broken lines are signs of victory. She realizes the fish Is not Just something that gives up without a fight, but It is something that has Just fought too long and Is tired of It. The persona realizes what the fish has gone through and Instantly gains respect and condemnation for It. She lets It go. For writing this poem, the author might have a family member that was offering from a disease. After a long time of painful struggle, that member finally gives up because he/she saw through the value of life, Just like the fish. However, there Is one thing that I disagree with the persona, because she states the fish has a five-haired beard of wisdom. In my pollen It should be five-haired beard of stupidity since the fish cannot learn from Its past. After being caught so many times by bait, the fish still falls for It. If that Is a sign of wisdom, then there Is something fishy about It.

Supermarket Impact Revenue Of Small Shop â⬠Myassignmethelp.Com
Question: Does Present Supermarket Impact The Revenue Of Small Shop? Answer: Introducation It is analyzed that present supermarket had hugely affected the revenue of small shop retailers. The entry of supermarket in Australia is the reason behind the exit of small shops in the food retailing sector in Australia. Entry of supermarkets through use of small-to-medium size formats had created a competitive threat for the existing small shops and reduced their endurance probability (Waddington et al., 2017). By this, it is understood that the result is robust for several representation stipulation as well as unreliable meaning of what constitute a supermarket. Therefore, the impact of supermarket entry is indisputable for small shops in the most appropriate way. Supermarkets are even providing products and services at cheaper rates that are attracting consumers to visit the store as everything is available under one roof. In that way, people are now avoiding to purchase from small shops that negatively affect the revenue as a whole. Research aim and objectives Aim The main aim of the study is to find out whether existence of present supermarkets had affected the revenue of small shops. Objectives To find out the problems faced by small shops in Australia while competing with Supermarkets To find out the solutions for the betterment as well as growth of unorganized retail sector To find out ways to save small shops from the supermarkets Brief methodology Literature synopsis As rightly put forward by Narayan Chandra (2015), entry of supermarkets increases market concentration. Firstly, entry can influence the employment in the sector as well as arrangement of the business. Secondly, if prices are lower in supermarkets than in small shops, this has direct impact on the consumer safety. Thirdly, economies of scale as well as scope of supermarkets increase the level of efficiency of the retail sector through imaginative devastation procedure. As opined by Loureno, Gijsbrechts Paap, (2015), large supermarkets have distorted the retail trade landscapes in most of the countries by use of larger store formats, increased assortment of goods as well as more shelf space and wide-ranging advertising strategies. Australia is a developed country where small retailers and producers had increased supporting stress for mitigating the negative effects of large supermarkets on earnings as well as survival probability. According to Waddington et al., (2017), supermarkets entry and small shops retailers restrict entry for promoting the sectors interests in general terms. It becomes difficult to get information about the supermarket size as it is not collected by any potential sources on regular basis. The competitive effects of entrants responses were due to existing regulation on matters relating to size of the market. Existing guideline had made it difficult for supermarkets for entering in the market. Hence, the local authority has been unenthusiastic for approving the entry of large supermarkets but not of small shop (Roggeveen, Nordflt Grewal, 2016). Data series and surveys Sampling unit Researcher will be using quantitative data by distributing questionnaire to shopkeepers and consumers of different areas of Australia (Pinard et al., 2016). Sampling technique The researcher will be using convenient and random sampling technique for gathering data. Sample size The researcher will be gathering sample of 50 shops that had been taken for the current research study. Data collection Researcher will be collecting data from both primary as well as secondary sources. Here, primary sources mean information that is collected from personal interview and observation method (Gauri et al., 2017). On the other hand, secondary sources mean gathering data from reliable sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books and authentic websites. Reference List Gauri, D. She also thought that it might have gotten a little hotter when she was sitting in the tub, so she decided to go to the kitchen and get a pot of coffee. The Benefits of Recycling Plastics
The Benefits of Recycling Plastics One good reason to recycle plastic is that there is just so much of it. Plastics are used to manufacture an incredible number of products we use every day, such as beverage and food containers, trash bags and grocery bags, cups and utensils, childrens toys and diapers, and bottles for everything from mouthwash and shampoo to glass cleaner and dishwashing liquid. And thats not even counting all the plastic that goes into furniture, appliances, computers,à and automobiles. The Need Is Growing As the use of plastics has increased over the years, they have become a larger part of our nations municipal solid waste (MSW)- growing from less than 1 percent in 1960 to more than 13 percent in 2013, according to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency. As an example of how and why plastic waste is increasing, the International Bottled Water Association reports that theà U.S.à consumed 9.67 billion gallons of bottled water in 2012, compared to 9.1 billion gallons the year before. The United States is the worlds leading consumer of bottled water. A good first step in reducing waste is switching to a reusable water bottle. Natural Resources and Energy Conservation Recycling plastics reduces the amount of energy and resources (such as water, petroleum, natural gas, and coal) needed to create plastic. According to a 2009 study by researchers Peter Gleick and Heather Cooleyà from the Pacific Institute of California, a pint-sized bottle of water requires about 2,000 times as much energy to produce as the same amount of tap water. Recycling Plastics Saves Landfill Space Recycling plastic products also keeps them out of landfills and allows the plastics to be reused in manufacturing new products. Recycling 1 ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space. And lets face it, a lot of plastic ends up directly in the environment, breaking down into tiny pieces, polluting our soil and water, and contributing to the oceans Great Garbage Patches. Its Relatively Easy Recycling plastics has never been easier. Today, 80 percent of Americans have easy access to a plastics recycling program, whether they participate in a municipal curbside program or live near a drop-off site. A universal numbering system for plastic types makes it even easier. According to the American Plastics Council, more than 1,800 U.S. businesses handle or reclaim postconsumer plastics. In addition, many grocery stores now serve as recycling collection sites for plastic bags and plastic wrap. Room for Improvement Overall, the level of plastics recycling is still relatively low. In 2012, only 6.7 percent of plastics in the municipal solid waste stream were recycled, according to the EPA. Alternatives to Plastic While recycling is important, one of the best ways to reduce the amount of plastic in our nations MSW is to find alternatives. For example, reusable grocery bags have seen a growth in popularity in recent years, and they are a great way to limit the amount of plastic that needs to be generated in the first place.
